Water Heaters

Hot water tanks have been the most common method of heating water in Canada for decades.

Although in recent years we are replacing this method of heating water with tankless and hybrid hot water tanks due to the concern with energy efficiency and costs to operate. The hot water tank is like a large kettle which heats a large tank of water and continues to heat the water in order to maintain a certain temperature. This means they are running and heating water when there is no demand for hot water, for example they are heating water while you are sleeping or away from your home for extended periods of time.

There are 4 different types of hot water tanks available today

Electric Hot Water Tanks

An electric hot water tank will cost less upfront and the install is much easier than a gas tank, which will save you upfront costs. These can be a good solution if natural gas is not available. These tanks are also available in much smaller sizes if your space is limited and you do not need to take longer showers.

While it's true that electric water heaters are more efficient than their gas counterparts, electric heaters still cost more to run over time. The cost of electricity is more than the cost of gas. However, the prices fluctuate, and this may not always be the case.

Natural Draft Hot Water Tanks

hese tanks are usually found in older houses and they require metal venting which goes out the roof of a house. These tanks are less expensive than their energy efficient cousins although they do cost more to operate.

Power Vent Hot Water Tank

These tanks are 10 to 20% more efficient than the Natural Draft style tanks and they have plastic venting which can go out the roof or the side wall of your house.

Hybrid Heat Pump Water Heaters

A Hybrid water heater can be an efficient option for your home under the right conditions. When operated at it’s optimum this technology is 4 times more efficient than a standard electric hot water tank. Their dual technology uses a heat pump to heat the water by utilizing the warm air already in your house and when needed this tank has electric back up for your mother in law’s visits. These devices also come with some added value such as wireless controls and leak detection.

Tankless Hot Water

Boiler or “Hydronic” System - Hydronic heating has been around for years, most of us know what it is when we hear the word “boiler” or “in-floor” or “radiant”. We have also heard how wonderful these systems are for managing ambient temperatures in a house, little to no dust as there aren’t any high powered fans blowing air through the house. And as with all heating equipment, boilers have become very efficient and can now fulfill both purposes of heating a house and providing hot water to your fixtures with a Combi-boiler system. The options are endless with today’s boilers and although they are a little pricey, they last a very long time!
